The Williamsburg Winery Earns Two Gold Medals at Prestigious National Wine Competition

It’s a California GOLD rush for The Williamsburg Winery’s 2017 Petit Verdot Reserve and Barrel-Aged Claret.

The Williamsburg Winery was awarded gold medals for its 2017 Petit Verdot Reserve and 2017 Barrel Aged Virginia Claret at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of North American wine in the world. 

The 2017 Petit Verdot Reserve “is a bold wine with flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, currant and cranberry with layers of cocoa, eucalyptus and vanilla,” said The Williamsburg Winery’s Winemaker Matthew Meyer. “Petit Verdot is the star red varietal of our estate vineyard here in Williamsburg. It’s one of the signature red wine grapes for the entire Commonwealth of Virginia.” 

The Williamsburg Winery’s 2017 Barrel-Aged Virginia Claret is a blend of 53% Cabernet Franc, 29% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot and 8% Norton. In Meyer’s tasting notes, he said it has “flavors of dark cherry, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry with a hint of cocoa and baking spices.”

This gold medal is the second national rating source to recognize the quality of the 2017 Barrel-Aged Virginia Claret red blend in as many months. Recently, Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded the 2017 Claret an 89-point rating.

The Williamsburg Winery received 11 medals total at the 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition – two gold, four silver and five bronze. 

Over 65 judges, representing various North American wine regions evaluated nearly 6,700 wines from over 1,000 wineries for the 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
