Spending the night at Wedmore Place is a marvelous retreat in itself, and often guests of the Williamsburg Winery hotel find the green space at Wessex Hundred so restorative, they rarely leave the grounds.
Sipping wine by the Duck Pond or enjoying a flight at the 1619 Pavilion are both respites on a seasonable day. Or linger inside the Gabriel Archer Tavern , where the Roasted Turkey Sandwich with Lingonberry Preserves is a classic.
Good food, great wine and healthy living on a farm that spans 400 acres with nearly 200 of those forested benefit the soul. Pick up a map of walking trails and forested areas at the front desk.
For guests who want to see more of Williamsburg, there’s plenty to do close by in addition to Merchants Square. Here are a list of excursions off the beaten path:
- Rent bikes and tour Colonial Williamsburg at your own pace. Our staff at Wedmore Place is happy to arrange whatever you have in mind and make recommendations.
- The Williamsburg Salt Spa is its own oasis, modeled after a Polish underground rehabilitation center that is a salt mine. At the spa, guests can relax for 45 minutes in a salt cave — a rejuvenating experience that speaks to the senses — and can follow that up with a massage or by floating in the private tank room.
- Sweethaven Lavender offers another getaway pleasing to the senses. From May to July, visitors can pick their own lavender, indulge in locally churned lavender ice cream or homemade lavender lemonade, and take home an assortment of handmade lavender gifts. Reservations are a must.
- Spend an afternoon at Wildwood Farm , a family-run goat and flower farm that also practices small-scale beekeeping. The Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats are friendly enough to pet, and a seasonal sunflower field is perfect for snapping photos. Open March-December.
- Explore Colonial Virginia in the traditional manner, on horse, at Lakewood Trails in Toano. Reservations only.
- Hike, bike, bird watch, rent a canoe or paddleboard or simply enjoy York River State Park. For a real treat, visit Fossil Beach, where “souvenirs” are fossils of shellfish and other aquatic creatures (please only take one!). Or escape into Waller Mill Park , 2,705 acres situated around a reservoir. The park includes an18-hole disc golf course.
- On your way to the Williamsburg Winery, you might have passed the Williamsburg Flight School , where your plane is waiting for an aerial tour of the Historic Triangle. Reservations can be made for multi-day or weekly rentals. Bike to the Governor’s Palace or capital building or go ice cream hopping. Once in the historic district, the only traffic is horse-drawn carriages as cars are prohibited!
- Ready to walk some more? Sign up for a Ghost Tour ! Multiple options to choose from, including the Ultimate Ghost Tour that starts at 10 p.m., which guides visitors through Indian burial grounds and an insane asylum.
- Looking to spruce up your Instagram? Don’t overlook the Governor Palace’s hedge maze, any of the buildings on Duke of Gloucester Street or the Crim Dell Bridge at William and Mary. Of course, Wessex Hundred can be an entire Instagram story all by itself.
